Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
