No fewer than thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
