Colombia's Leader Warns 'I Would Take Up Arms Once More' should United States Intervenes Militarily.

The US President along with his Colombian counterpart have intensified the tone of their exchange, heightening tensions in their relations following US forces targeted Venezuela to remove President Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He runs drug factories and processing labs and that won't last much longer," the US president stated.

Growing Rhetoric coupled with Allegations

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, the US president suggested similar use of force towards the South American nation, claiming Colombia is also "very ill" and governed by an unwell individual involved in producing narcotics and distributing it to the US."

While Colombia remains the globe's biggest source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the trade.

A Frayed Partnership

This nation was historically a staunch collaborator of the US in the fight combating drug cartels and enjoyed cross-party backing from American politicians, yet ties have soured significantly since Trump assumed the presidency.

Its drug trade is mainly overseen by guerrilla factions including one major cartel, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and breakaway groups of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members demobilised after a landmark accord.

Petro's Firm Rebuttal

In response to a query if armed intervention like that in Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good to me personally."

The Colombian leader, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed in the 1990s, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am not an illegitimate leader and I am not a narco," he declared.

"He comments uninformed. Cease defaming me," he expressed in a post.

"If US bombs target peasants, they will turn into a multitude of fighters in the hills. And should they arrest me, whom a large part of Colombians admires and supports, they will unleash the powerful force of the people," he admonished.

From Fighter to Statesman

Petro spent part of his youth as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization although reports indicate he did not engaged in fighting. After demobilizing, he participated in creating the nation's constitution in the early 90s and later became a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of Bogotá before being elected president.

"I made a vow not to touch a weapon again ... but for the homeland I would take up arms again," he vowed.

Heightened Measures along with Cross-Political Condemnation

Colombia's defense chief reported that Petro's security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with the US president, however, leaders spanning Colombian politics have denounced the notion of a US attack against their nation.

Bilateral and Financial Sanctions

Washington withdrew his travel authorization following he encouraged American soldiers to refuse orders that violate law. Later, in October, it placed asset freezes targeting Petro, his spouse and a number of associates.

At the same time the US was building up its forces in the Caribbean and bombing suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out operations against vessels in the eastern Pacific region off the Colombian coast.
